Zambia-born, UK-based artist Joshua Mbewe, a.k.a. Laxcity, makes imaginative electronic music that draws on powerful chord progressions, textured ambience, vocal and other foley elements, to create immersive and intricate soundscapes with strong emotional resonance. Laxcity released his eponymous EP to DSPs in early 2017; his next EP, Introspection, followed shortly thereafter.
On December 14, 2018, he released his debut album, Catharsis, via Berlin-based tastemaker label Majestic Casual. It’s a project whose polished sonics exhibit his striking command over the realm of structure-less, boundary-pushing electronica for which he’s become known.
Tabbed by Billboard Dance as an “Artist to Watch,” Laxcity has accumulated 10M+ streams across all DSPs, including over 2M total streams on the self-released single “Good Morning,” from April, 2018; received multiple radio spins on Beats 1 and BBC’s 1Xtra; worked alongside, and/or garnered the support of, influential artists such as Alina Baraz, Jeremy Zucker, EKALI, San Holo, Galimatias, and Medasin; been profiled by Pilerats, EDM.com, NEST HQ, Your EDM and others; and, finally, received significant editorial support on Apple Music (e.g., “Today’s Chill” and “Vibes”) and Spotify (e.g., “Fresh Finds” and “Genre Glitch”).
With a musical palette that runs the gamut from orchestral, downtempo and ambient music, to trap and future beats, Laxcity is convention-defying electronic music typified.
